Memories of Us (2011)

February-2011

The girl's parents weren't home, and her cousins and Uncle were staying over for a few days. Her Uncle had just gotten back to feed the horses, and remarked that Cassidy's horse, Sweetheart, was not eating. Now, this wasn't usual, Sweetheart would usually eat any food she could get her hooves on. So, Cassidy and Christian ran outside to check on her. What they found made Cassidy's heart sink- Sweetheart was colicking, a stomach disease that had taken her other horse, Blue, away from her a few years back.

Her Uncle Derrill called the vet, who would take about half an hour to get to the house. By then, Cassidy knew, it could be too late for Sweetheart. Having experienced this before, Cassidy and Christian put Sweetheart on a lead and led her out to the grass, something Sweetheart usually could not resist. They sat there, watching the four-year-old mare stare at the ground, not eating. They decided to lead her around, to get her moving, hoping that moving around would coax her to eat. To pass the time, they looked up at the night sky and talked. They talked about everything, from trivial things like favorite movies or songs (how he had a huge crush on Katy Perry), to more deep topics of life, such as plans for the future. She planned on being a Doctor, while he wasn't too sure. He told her that he was thinking about going into the Army, and though that worried her, she supported him.

They talked about their love lives, both of which had non-existant ones, about hurts, about loves, about life itself, about religion. About classes, and how he hated school and thought of dropping out. She convinced him not to.

Finally, Sweetheart lowered her head and started eating, slowly at first. Within ten minutes, she was eating hungrily, tearing at the grass. By the time the vet arrived, Sweetheart was fine, and Christian and Cassidy smiled a secret smile at each other, knowing they had helped save this beautiful horse's life.

Summer-2011

"Wanna go out to eat somewhere?"
"Where? I'm free next Sunday!"
"Let's go to Sauce, it's one of my favorite places, you'd like it!"

They'd grown closer. Christian had recently developed a huge crush on Cassidy's best friend Laney, and the two cousins had spent long nights on facebook conspiring to hook the two up.

"She's a vegetarian? She doesn't like chocolate? What am I supposed to get her for Valentine's Day, cabbage?" He joked one night.

On that warm Sunday, Christian came by Cassidy's house, and Cassidy drove Christian to Sauce. On the way there, Cassidy told Christian about the college she was planning on attending. "It's called Point Loma. I'm actually going to be living in a boy's dorm with a hall of girls! Isn't that funny?!"
"A what!? Cassidy, I don't know about this..."
"And my roommate Kendall is from Flagstaff..."
"Flagstaff?! Oh no, Cass, she's gonna be a weirdo!"
"Put on your seat belt, Christian, my car is yelling at you. You're gonna get killed." Cassidy warned, jokingly.
"No, I won't, My car's a beast!"
"Just humor me, will you? I won't have you dying in my car." She said, and with an eye roll he put his seat belt on.

When they got to Sauce, Christian stood for ten minutes, studying the menu. "Get the mac and cheese, it's really good." Cassidy said for the 20th time. Finally, Christian agreed and got the Mac and cheese.

They sat at their table, drinking soda and eating the yummy bread rolls that the waitress had given them. "So, Christian, do you have a girlfriend?" Cassidy asked, leaning in.
"No, you know, I think I'm going to wait until college, you know? Having a girlfriend right now just seems pointless. I'm looking for marriage, after all, I've gotta find a mature girl, not just some highschool kid." He said, and Cassidy nodded, agreeing to stick to the same plan.
"Cass, I'm so proud of you for going to college."
"Where did that come from?"
"I'm serious, it's a big thing! You're growing up! Just...hey...listen, just one thing."
"What?"
"Don't get pregnant, okay?

Thanksgiving-2011

She ran to him, enveloping him in the biggest hug she could give. She hadn't seen him in months after being away at her first semester of college, so when they saw each other now, they were so happy.

They sat by each other at the dinner table, rolling their eyes at their ten year old cousin Halle and her annoying gabbering, communicating their feelings just by a look, saying a paragraph which just a funny facial expression. He had about four plates at dinner, Cassidy wasn't sure where he kept it all!! After dinner, Halle, their Auntie Barbara ( a 40 year old drummer in a metal rock band), and Cassidy decided to go outside and have a walk in the snow. Cassidy literally had to drag Christian out of there, but she wanted to talk to him since she hadn't for such a long time. Plus she didn't want to have to deal with Halle alone.

When Auntie Barbie fell down the icy steps, Christian and Cassidy literally could not contain their laughter, and fell to the ground, laughing so hard they cried. Halle ran toward some donkeys being held in a pen (they were having Thanksgiving dinner at a lodge up in the mountains this year) and Cassidy started taking pictures of them. "Christian, I want a picture of you and me. Halle take one!"
"Cass, I'm not photogenic, please no."
"Come on, for me?"
"Fine..."
That picture turned out so well, her smiling happily with his arm around her, a smug look on his face. He laughed about it and told her to delete it, but she didn't.

As they were leaving, walking to the cars, Cassidy felt something freezing hit her back. She turned and saw Christian giggling like an idiot, his glove covered in leftover snow from his snowball. "Why, you-" She said and ran towards him, picking up a ball of snow and chucking it at him. What ensued next was a family-wide snowball fight. Cassidy's shining moment was hitting Christian right in the back of the head, and Christian did the same to both of his cousins. Alexandre even joined in, laughing hard at them.

Christmas-2011-The best day of the year

"Christian, you can't eat it, it's not lunch time yet..."
"But what if-"
"No, mom will yell at you!"
"But I...what if I just..." He was standing over the bowl of simmering chili, a fork in his hand, ready to just eat out of the bowl.
Quickly, when no one was looking, he took a forkful and plopped it into his mouth.
Cassidy rolled her eyes, taking a bite of her Christmas cookie. "I don't know how you can still be hungry, you've had like, twenty cookies already."
"I'm always hungry, Cass, duh!" He said, reaching down with his fork to take another bite.

About ten minutes later, Cassidy, Halle, Christian, and Alexandre sat on the couch, each with a bowl of chili, talking. Halle was blabbering away about her fancy dress and Christian mumbles, "It's a terrible color on you." Halle, 10 years old, burst out crying and ran to her mommy, saying how mean Christian was to her. Later, Cassidy found out, Christian pulled Halle aside, telling her that he really liked the dress, that it looked really pretty on her.

When it was time to open presents, Christian practically tackled Cassidy in a hug. She had gotten him a blue jacket from Tillys, one that apparently he adored, and would "wear every single day from then on!". From Grandpa he got a toolbox, which he spent a good hour playing with, explaining to Cassidy what tool did what and what he could use on his car.

He left soon after, saying how his teacher was making some jumbalaya and that he HAD to have some, even though he had eaten a ton anyway. He gave Cassidy a huge hug and promised to come visit her that semester at her school.

He promised...
